The Curse

"Every wound I take, another demon grows. Every day I live, another price is owed."

In feudal Japan's final, haunted age, samurai Takashi Onoda watched his lord fall to betrayal. With his dying breath, the lord placed a curse: Onoda cannot die. Not in battle. Not from hunger. Not from age.

But immortality has a cost. The Yokai smell it on him. The more he fights, the more they gather. And the deeper he descends into the realm between worlds, the less human he remains.

Protagonist

Takashi Onoda

Former retainer of House Kurokami. Skilled blade. Cursed soul. He carries the weight of an immortality he never asked for, and the rage of a man who cannot even choose to rest.

Forty-seven Yokai. Each with a history. Each with a reason to hunt Onoda. None of them willing to negotiate.

Threat / S-Class

Gashadokuro

A massive skeleton formed from the rage of the unburied dead. It does not chase. It waits. It only appears when Onoda has been carrying too much shame without resolution.

Ability: Bone Grip / Spiritual Drain

Threat / A-Class

Kuchisake-onna

The slit-mouthed woman. She offers Onoda a choice each time they meet. The answers change. The consequences never do. She's been following him since the first curse day.

Ability: Truth Compulsion / Memory Theft

Oni Warlord

Once a general of the underworld. Now appointed to capture Onoda for the realm below. He respects the samurai. That does not mean he will stop.

Ability: Flame Wave / Honor Binding

Tengu Hunters

Mountain spirits with the faces of crows. They hunt in packs, using wind and altitude. They believe Onoda is a theft from death that must be returned.

Ability: Wind Burst / Pack Formation

Jorogumo

A spider spirit that takes the form of a noble woman. She weaves traps in politics and silk. She wants Onoda's curse for herself, believing it could free her from her own prison.

Ability: Silk Bind / Illusion Field

Kappa Scouts

Water sprites that trade information across the spirit world. They may be bribed with cucumber offerings. They may also report Onoda's location to anyone willing to pay more.

Ability: River Drag / Information Broker

The Curse Gauge

Onoda's immortality is a resource. The more he uses it, the stronger the Yokai become. Every resurrection triggers a more powerful enemy response. Choose when to die wisely.

Blade Memory

Every sword Onoda uses absorbs the memory of its previous owner. Fight long enough and the blade begins to fight on its own. But every memory has a desire, and blades are stubborn.

Shame and Honor

Choices accumulate as shame or honor. Both affect the world differently. Honor attracts allies. Shame attracts certain Yokai. Neither path is wrong. Both are dangerous.

Night Cycle

The world is safer in daylight. At night, Yokai density triples and the boundary between living and dead collapses. Some missions can only be started at night. Many cannot be finished before dawn.

Permadeath Mode

Optional but encouraged. When Onoda finally dies in permadeath mode, his ghost enters the world as a new Yokai type in a subsequent run. The boundary between player and enemy collapses.

Shrine Network

Ancient shrines scattered through the world provide rest, trade, and information. But each visit is noticed by something in the realm below. Some shrines have been compromised. Know which ones to trust.
